Conclusion Ceremony on Training Support in the Field of Organ Transplantation between Viet Duc University Hospital and Siemens

The conclusion ceremony on Training Support in the Field of Organ Transplantation between Viet Duc University Hospital and Siemens has taken place at Viet Duc University Hospital, Hanoi on 9 November 2006, marking a new milestone between two parties. According to this signed Memorandum of Understanding, Siemens will provide Viet Duc University Hospital with training assistance in the field of organ transplantation including the establishment of relationship between Viet Duc University Hospital and University Hospitals/Clinics in Germany which have high capability and deep expertise in organ transplantation, the arrangement of local and oversea training courses, the organization of related scientific workshops and exchange forums as well as financial support. This memorandum shall be effective within two years, starting from 1 October 2006 and will be automatically extended upon mutual wish.

The initiative of organ transplantation was geared up in Vietnam by late Professor Ton That Tung in 1967. At that time, some overseas training courses on organ transplantation for the outstanding surgeons were organized by Professor Tung and his colleagues. With the help from the world’s leading hospitals and clinics, a lot of experiments and surveys have been deployed and we have so far successfully implemented some cases of organ transplantation. Viet Duc University Hospital is one of the pioneers in organ transplantation with a wide range of theoretical and practical studies.

A national prize was awarded to Viet Duc University Hospital and Institute of Military for their contribution in the field of organ transplantation in 1992. Several cases of routine kidney transplantation including kidney transplantation on live body, self-kidney transplantation and liver transplantation on pigs have been carried out in the hospital. In addition, heart transplantation is being experimented with initial results.

The agreement signed today expresses the increasing social interest in organ transplantation, given that the training and the development of skillful human resources is one of the key factors in order to catch up with the world’s leading countries. It also expresses Siemens’ long-term commitment to Viet Duc University Hospital as well as its social responsibility in Vietnam.

Viet Duc University Hospital is the cradle of Vietnam’s surgery and is also the country’s largest surgical center that is known for the famous name of Ex-Professor Ton That Tung and his method of liver surgery in last four decades. For more information, pls visit: www.vietduchospital.edu.vn
